York Technical College is launching a new information technology institute that will prepare students for a rapidly growing career field.
The Advanced Information Technology Institute will be housed at the college’s Indian Land campus this fall and will offer advanced training for high-demand careers in information technology, York Tech officials said. A rise in the need of information technology professionals helped lay the foundation to offering sought-after programs.
“We are in an area that is experiencing a rapidly-growing need for IT professionals with advanced skills,” said James Thomas, department chair for Information Technology at York Technical College. “The institute allows access to advanced training for anyone who is interested in gaining these skills, whether it is for credit or through continuing education.”
Programs offered at the institute this fall will include the Cisco network operations certificate and the advanced network security certificate. Advanced cybersecurity will be available at the institute next fall.

Participants enrolled in these programs will gain working knowledge of routers, switches, network applications as well as protocols, and can anticipate pursuing career opportunities upon completion of the program within four semesters.
“The programs interconnect,” Thomas said, “so if you want to attend classes at a later date or desire to come back for more training, you will be able to easily begin at the next stage of your certification.”
Job placement rates for these programs have been trending at 100 percent for three consecutive years and include careers as network engineers, network administrators, network technicians, IT analysts and security consultants, according to officials.
The next cohort for the Cisco network operations certificate begins Oct. 12.
