MIDDLE

Rawlinson Road

An open house will be held for rising sixth-graders and their parents from 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 20. Parents are asked to bring their student's schedule and report to their child's homebase teacher.

HIGH

Northwestern

Times and dates for class registration in cafeteria will be: 12th-graders, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 13; 11th-graders, 1 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 13; 10th-graders, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 14; ninth-graders, 1 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 14. Parking passes, ID photos, books, schedules and lockers will be issued. Only grades 10 to 12 can apply for a parking pass. Passes are $15 for the year, and students must have car registration and a valid driver's license, not a permit. Ninth-graders need to bring a combination lock if they want a locker; 10th- to 12th-graders will be provided a lock.

South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics

Several area students are participating in the Summer Program for Research Interns, which is a graduation requirement. This six-week experience is taking place in a variety of research settings throughout the state. Students choose topics to research and are paired with mentors who are professionals.

Chippy Sreedharan of Rock Hill is participating in a cell study at the Medical University of South Carolina's Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy. She is examining the effects of certain aspects of vitamin A and chemotherapy on lung cancer cells.

Nabiha Hossain of Rock Hill is participating in an advanced manufacturing-biomanufacturing study at Clemson University's Department of Mechanical Engineering. She is researching the direct writing of electronic and sensor materials using a laser transfer technique.

Jenny Burnett is participating in a heart study at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine's Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience. She is researching the deposition and accumulation of extra cellular matrix regulated in the heart and its contribution to heart failure.

Sarah Hager, 2007 graduate of the South Carolina Governor's School of Science and Mathematics, recently was awarded an Old Main Scholarship. She was a member of the Model United Nations team and the basketball and volleyball teams. She is the daughter of Tim and Peggy Hager of Rock Hill.
