This Triangle bike trail was named among the best in the South, says Southern Living
A Triangle trail was highlighted as one of the best in the South in a recent report by Southern Living.
The American Tobacco Trail was declared one of the eight best bike trails in the South to explore this summer.
The trail was built on an abandoned railroad corridor, stretching from Apex to Durham Bulls Athletic Park and passing through Wake, Chatham and Durham Counties.
Today, the trail has gardens, interpretive exhibits, picnic areas, educational programs and ample room to hike, bike or meander its many miles. There are also restrooms, benches and drinking water stations to rest.
American Tobacco Trail among best bike trails
“This 22-mile rails-to-trails byway in North Carolina’s Research Triangle follows the route of the rail line built in 1906 for The American Tobacco Company to transport its tobacco-leaf harvests. The thick stands of trees flanking long sections provide the illusion of seclusion even when the path passes near neighborhoods,” Southern Living wrote.
“Its northern terminus in Durham stops at the front door of Durham Bulls Athletic Park, home to the Durham Bulls minor league baseball team made famous in the 1980s flick, ‘Bull Durham.’”
