Two local basketball teams soon could be competing in state championships.
The South Pointe girls basketball team is one win away from going to the Class AAAA state championship -- and this is only the school's second season of varsity basketball.
It has been a season of firsts for the team. This is the school's first team to win a region title and, if the Lady Stallions beat Dorman tonight, it will be South Pointe's first Upper State championship.
South Pointe beat Spartanburg Monday in a 59-57 nail-biter to win the third round of the Class AAAA Upper State playoffs and the privilege of traveling to Clemson University's Littlejohn Coliseum to take on Dorman at 7 p.m.

Significantly, this also is the first year Brett Childers has coached the team, getting a sterling performance from the squad. Advancing to the state semi-finals in the second year of existence for this basketball program is a remarkable achievement.
Here's hoping the Lady Stallions go on to win it all.
With a dramatic 65-57 win over Travelers Rest on Tuesday, the Chester boys basketball team will face Greenville in the Upper State Championship Saturday.
Chester fans were stirred up during football season by a team that went all the way to the state championship, only to lose a heartbreaker to Wilson. But with a win over Greenville, the basketball team could find itself in a battle for the state trophy, too.
We doubt local fans regard this as too much excitement for one town. With a tradition of winning teams, Cyclones fans are ready for anything.
We hope this is another winning year for the team.
Go Lady Stallions! Go Cyclones!
