Rodd's clutch 3 leads Eagles past Panthers

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Tiffany Rodd hit a 3-pointer with 11.7 seconds remaining to give Winthrop a 68-67 victory over High Point in its conference opener Wednesday.

Mackenzie Maier hit a turnaround jumper in the lane to give High Point a 67-65 lead with 2:23 to go in the game. On the next possession, Rodd missed a 3-pointer, but made up for it at the end.

Yvonne van Daalen drove the lane for the game-tying basket, but her shot was too strong. Jennifer Walker got the offensive rebound and kicked it out to Rodd, who quickly released a 3-point attempt that swished through the net.

High Point (9-8, 1-1) led by six points with 14:36 remaining after a Frances Fields runner. Ashley Fann ended a 7-2 Panther run with a 3-pointer that started a run for the Eagles. Winthrop (13-6, 1-0) outscored High Point 13-2 over the next two and half minutes that was capped by another Fann 3. The Eagles didn't trail again until a Jennifer Long layup with 2:37 to go put High Point up 65-63.
