Lady Warriors knock off state's top team in softball

INDIAN LAND -- Defense played a big role as No. 2-ranked Indian Land defeated No. 1 McBee 1-0.

"We played together as a team," Lady Warriors coach Monica Barfield said.

Three defensive miscues led to the game's sole run in the bottom of the third inning. Indian Land's Paige Brugh singled. While facing the next runner, McBee pitcher Callie Wayne threw a wild pitch, which put Brugh at second. A throwing error from the third base moved Brugh to third. Brugh beat the throw from third on a ground ball to score the only run of the contest.

In all, McBee committed four errors. The Indian Land defense was spotless, with no errors behind the stellar pitching of Kimber Coley, who recorded her second win of the year by throwing a complete game, no-hit shutout.

"It was definitely a team effort," Barfield said. "With the pitching from Kimber and the defense, with no errors, played a big role in that."
