Former Winthrop outfielder Jacob Dempsey has found his batting eye for Washington of the independent Frontier League.
In a four-game stretch last week, Dempsey collected five hits and drove in four runs to raise his batting average to .358, a tie for 10th in the league.
Dempsey, an outfielder-designated hitter, is tied for first in the FL with eight doubles, is second in extra base hits (10) and is tied for second in RBIs (15).
The left-handed Dempsey was Philadelphia's 21st-round pick in the 2006 draft. He batted .262 with a team-high 17 doubles and seven homers for Batavia that season.

• KNIGHTS MOVES: The Charlotte Knights made several moves last week.
Outfielder Dewayne Wise rejoined the Knights after a brief stint with the Chicago White Sox. Wise appeared in three games with the White Sox, going 0-for-6 with two strikeouts and a stolen base.
Relief pitcher Ehren Wassermann was optioned to the Knights from Chicago and outfielder Thomas Collaro was sent from the Knights to Double-A Birmingham. Collaro was batting .242 with five homers and nine RBIs in 19 games.
• KNIGHT RETIRES: Charlotte infielder-outfielder Jeff Liefer announced his retirement last week, ending a 13-year professional career.
The 33-year-old Liefer signed as a free agent with the White Sox in January after spending the past two seasons in Japan with the Seibu Lions.
The left-handed hitter returned to the organization which made him its No. 1 pick in the 1995 Draft out of Long Beach State.
Liefer spent a little over eight years in the White Sox's system but also played in the Montreal, Tampa Bay, Milwaukee and Cleveland organizations.
Liefer was batting .224 with three homers and 16 RBIs in 40 games for the Knights this year.
• BASEBALL CAMP: The Charlotte Knights will hold the Rookie Knights Baseball Camp on June 19-20 in Knights Stadium.
Children ages 6-13 are invited to come out and learn baseball from Knights manager Marc Bombard, his staff and players.
The camp will run from 9 a.m.-noon each day. Campers are asked to arrive at 8:30 a.m. each day for registration. Participants should wear appropriate clothes for physical activity and bring a glove.
Each camper will receive a T-shirt, two tickets to the June 21 game vs. Lehigh Valley and a pre-game buffet supper that evening.

• A'S TO JAYS: Oakland traded former South Carolina infielder Kevin Melillo to Toronto for cash considerations.
The 26-year-old Melillo, who had been designated for assignment by Oakland on May 30, was drafted by the A's in the fifth round of the 2004 draft. He appeared in one game for the A's last season.
Melillo batted .260 with five homers and 17 RBIs in 38 games with Triple-A Sacramento this season. He has been assigned to the Blue Jays' Syracuse farm team.
