Crawford advances in 200-meter heat

BEIJING -- Van Wyck native Shawn Crawford advanced to tonight's second round of qualifying in the Olympics men's 200 meters on Monday.

Crawford, the defending 200-meter Olympic champion, advanced along with fellow American Walter Dix, who won the 100 bronze Saturday. The second round will be held at 8:10 this morning. The semifinals are scheduled for tonight at 9:25.

Olympic events can be seen on NBC (cable channel 6 in Rock Hill) or its affiliate cable networks.

Olympic 100-meter champion Usain Bolt also advanced to the second round of qualifying. The Jamaican didn't win his first-round 200 heat Monday morning, taking it easy and finishing second to Rondell Sorillo of Trinidad and Tobago. The top three runners in each heat advance.

Bolt, who broke his own world record in the 100 by winning the gold medal in 9.69 seconds Saturday, moved a step closer to becoming the first man to complete a sprint double at the Summer Games since Carl Lewis did it in 1984.

The finals for the event will be Tuesday at 10:20 a.m.
