Rock Hill girls basketball team rallies late to pick up a victory over Clover

Points were hard to come by in the matchup between the Rock Hill and Clover, but a 15-2 fourth-quarter run provided just enough points Tuesday as the Lady Bearcats rallied from behind for the second consecutive game, winning 36-34.

Rock Hill trailed by nine points entering the final period when it stepped up its defensive pressure. Clover had trouble with the Lady Bearcats' full-court press.

When Clover made it through the press, the Lady Eagles struggled with their shots. Rock Hill held Clover without a field goal in the final stanza.

Tionna Massy's defense helped Rock Hill recover from their own shooting woes in the third period, when they scored just three points.

Massy had steals on back-to-back possessions for Rock Hill; the latter enabled Rock Hill to tie the game for the first time in the half when Maggie Rogers knocked down two shots from the charity stripe.

Rogers' points made the score 33-31 with 55 seconds remaining in the game, and the Lady Bearcats never relinquished the lead.

The Lady Eagles cut the lead to one with 24 seconds left and regained possession with a chance to tie or take the lead, but Rock Hill's defense stood their ground and held on for the win.

Laquesha Crockett paced the Lady Bearcats' scoring attack with a game-high 13 points.

Crocket's three 3-pointers in the first half were Rock Hill's only offensive highlights until the final period.

Clover's Iesha Wade was the only Lady Eagle in double-digit scoring, finishing with a dozen points. Joclin Poole added eight points and Stephanie Dover scored five and added 13 rebounds in the losing effort.

"We have a team this season that has so much character," said Rock Hill coach Eric Rollings.

"They don't quit. I told the girls after the third period that they had played their worst quarter of the season, but we were still in it. Fortunately, we responded and came away with a nice win."
