CHARLOTTE -- Winthrop's Andre Jones has been named Big South Conference New Balance freshman of the week for games played Jan. 19-25.
Jones averaged 18 points and 3.5 assists in two games. He scored back-to-back career-highs as he had 15 points in a win at Charleston Southern and 21 points at Coastal Carolina. He connected on 6 of 10 field goals and 3 of 4 from the line against the Buccaneers, along with four assists. Jones went 8-of-14 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from long range, against the Chanticleers, in addition to three assists and two steals. Jones finished the week 14-of-24 from the field and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc and has scored in double figures in three straight games and four of his last five.
Jones is Winthrop's first freshman of the week this season.
Liberty senior guard Anthony Smith was chosen the Big South Conference Choice Hotels player of the week.
Smith averaged 21 points, 7.5 rebounds, three steals and shot .563 percent from 3-point range (9-of-16) for the Flames. He scored 24 points, including 19 in the second half, to lead Liberty to a 61-56 come-from-behind win at High Point. Smith had 18 points and 12 rebounds in a double-overtime loss to Radford.
