LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Winthrop couldn't overcome a second-half run by Liberty as it fell 63-48, Monday evening in Big South Conference women's basketball action at the Vines Center.
The loss ended a five-game winning streak by the Lady Eagles as they fall to 12-12 overall on the year and 6-5 in the Big South. Liberty improved to 16-7 overall and 10-0 in the conference.
After Shanice Cole scored inside to make it a one-point game, things got away from the Lady Eagles just over midway through the second half as Liberty went on a 13-0 run. Winthrop's offense went stagnant as it missed two layups, a mid-range jumper and turned the ball over three times during the run.
Liberty had a lot of success in the game down low as it finished with a 38-18 advantage in the paint.
"Our defense wasn't very good tonight,"Winthrop coach Bud Childers said. "We gave away too many baskets in the paint and you can't beat this team if you give away layups. That was the difference in the game."
Megan Frazee led the way for the Lady Flames as she finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds. She scored all of her field goals in the paint (18 points). Liberty also got to the line 20 times and hit 12 for 60 percent. Liberty finished the game shooting 48 percent from the floor.
Winthrop, which had shot better than 50 percent in the last four games, finished the game at 30 percent, including 28 percent in the second half.
"They play well here at home and you've got to really play a good game to win here," Childers added. "But we had a lot of foul trouble that translated to stopping them in the paint. They deserved to win the game tonight as they were the better team."
Liberty opened the game on an 8-0 run that was started by two baskets inside by Megan Frazee. Ashley Fann ended the run with a lay-up off a nice pass from Ashley Haugtvedt. Winthrop cut the lead to four points on a basket inside by Shelly Hankins. Liberty then opened up a nine-point advantage at 15-6 after an Avery Warley jumper at the foul line.
The Lady Eagles responded with an 11-2 run to tie the game at 17-17 with 8:23 to go in the half. Tiffany Rodd hit two 3s during the run and Yvonne van Daalen drained a 3-pointer in the corner. Megan Frazee put Liberty back up by two moments later.
Winthrop took the lead for the first time in the game on a 3-pointer from Haugtvedt. Liberty outscored the Lady Eagles 7-4 to end the half and led 26-23 at the break.
Fann finished the game with a team-high 12 points and pulled down 4 rebounds. Cole finished with 9 points and 7 rebounds. Haugtvedt added 8 points, 3 assists and a block.
Warley finished the game a perfect 7 for 7 for 14 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Hammond added 11 points and 5 assists.
