A tie-breaker lost, Winthrop’s bid to defend Big South title begins in Asheville

Winthrop University’s men’s basketball team will be seeded third in this coming week’s Big South Conference tournament when the Eagles play at UNC Asheville’s Kimmel Arena, the league office announced Sunday morning.

The Eagles finished in a tie for second with Radford, but lost a tie breaker. Winthrop ended the regular season with an 18-11 mark overall and 12-6 in the league. Winthrop will face sixth-seeded Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals of the conference championship. The game will air on ESPN 3 as the Eagles look to defend their 2016-17 Big South Title. UNC Asheville is the No. 1 seed.

Tickets are now on sale through Asheville’s ticket office and at uncabulldogs.universitytickets.com. First round action begins Tuesday night, Feb. 27 with No. 7 High Point hosting No. 10 Longwood at 7 p.m., while No. 8 Charleston Southern will host No. 9 Presbyterian College also at 7 p.m. The two first round games on Feb. 27 will be broadcast live on the Big South Network and Roku.

The Championship game is scheduled for March 4 live on ESPN at 1 p.m. The Big South’s tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Conference Championship schedule is as follows:

First Round: Tuesday, Feb. 27 – Big South Network/Roku

▪ Game 1: No. 10 Longwood at No. 7 High Point, 7 p.m.

▪ Game 2: No. 9 Presbyterian at #8 Charleston Southern, 7 p.m.

Quarterfinals: Thursday, March 1 – ESPN3

▪ Game 3: No. 2 Radford vs. No. 7/10 winner, 1 p.m.

▪ Game 4: No. 3 Winthrop vs. No. 6 Gardner-Webb, 3 p.m.

▪ Game 5: No. 1 UNC Asheville vs. No. 8/9 winner, 7 p.m.

▪ Game 6: No. 4 Campbell vs. No. 5 Liberty, 9 p.m.

Semifinals - Friday, March 2 – ESPN3

▪ Game 7: Semifinals – Game 3 winner vs. Game 4 winner, 6 p.m.

▪ Game 8: Semifinals – Game 5 winner vs. Game 6 winner, 8 p.m.

Championship - Sunday, March 4 – ESPN
