HIGH POINT, N.C. -- The Winthrop volleyball team secured the Big South Conference co-regular-season championship with a 30-26, 30-20, 27-30, 30-25 over High Point on Saturday afternoon at Millis Athletic Center.
The Eagles finish up regular-season play with an overall mark of 18-10 and 11-1 in conference play, while the Panthers end the year 24-8 and 8-4 in league action.
The win assured Winthrop of at least a tie for the championship, and Liberty topped Radford on Saturday to force the tie. The squads were named co-champions, but the Flames earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big South tournament by virtue of their win over the Eagles earlier in the season.
The Eagle offense was led Saturday by middle hitter Shannon Sitzmann and her 20 kills. Right-side hitter Kelley Taylor led all players in hitting percentage with a .419 mark.
Outside hitter Kellie Sellers, with 11 kills and 14 digs, and setter Kelsey Hall, who had 57 assists and 13 digs, picked up double-doubles in the match. Libero Pohai Nu'uhiwa was the match leader in digs with 28.
For High Point, Lindsay Raus led her team in kills with 16, while Julie Hershkowitz posted 20 digs to lead the back row.
