Winthrop downs S.C. State to move to 3-1

ORANGEBURG -- Winthrop placed three players in double figures and picked up a 70-58 road victory over S.C. State Wednesday.

"We're thrilled," said coach Bud Childers, whose team moved to 3-1 and is off to the best start in the program's history at the Division I level. "I thought we'd have a pretty good chance to be a good team, and nothing's changed my mind. Tonight I was really impressed how we played the first 20 minutes and then the last five minutes regrouping when the team makes a run on their home court in a hostile environment."

Junior Ashley Fann led the team with 17 points. She led the Eagles in the first half with 14 and helped spark a 15-1 run midway through the half to put Winthrop in front 26-9 with 8:24 to play.

Winthrop, which connected on 17-of-31 shots (54.8 percent) in the first half, pushed the lead to as many as 24 after Franchesca Davenport's lay-up with 14:25 remaining the second half.

Over the next six minutes, the Bulldogs, taking advantage of several Winthrop turnovers, charged back to narrow the deficit to nine with just under six minutes left. Sophilia Hipps, who scored a game-high 25, was key to the Bulldogs' comeback attempt.

Ashley Haugtvedt converted two free throws to push the gap back to 14, 65-51, with 3:25 remaining, and the Eagles held on for the win. Haugtvedt joined Fann in double figures with 13 and junior college transfer Jennifer Walker added 10.

"We were able to finish the game in winning style," said Childers. "The two ways you do that is getting rebounds on the other end and get the ball inside so the guards get fouled and then make free throws. This game's going to pay some dividends down the road."

Winthrop connected on a season-high 70 percent from the foul line, including 5-of-6 in the final four minutes to secure the win.

Winthrop returns to action Sunday at Tulane. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast at winthropeagles.com.
