MOBILE, Ala. -- The Winthrop women's tennis team clinched its first victory of the 2008 season Saturday as it defeated Louisiana-Monroe 7-0 at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Lady Eagles are now 1-5 on the season, while the Warhawks drop to 3-4.
Winthrop clinched the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. The duo of Sara Abutovic and Yelena Fadina defeated Lena Satge and Giovanna Arrondo 8-3. Larisa Bekmetova and Lisa Wilkinson won the other doubles match by defeating Ana Burjaili and Elodie Burlet 8-2 to give the Lady Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
The Lady Eagles won all six singles matches against the Warhawks to clinch the victory. Elizaveta Zaytseva won her No. 1 singles match by defeating Noelia Leon 6-3, 7-5. Patricia Coimbra, playing No. 2 singles for Winthrop, won her match against Satge 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 3 singles match, Sara Abutovic defeated Burjaili 7-6 (9), 6-4. Wilkinson, Bekmetova and Paula Pereira all won their first singles matches of the 2008 season against the Warhawks. Pereira had to fight off Sharon Makhanya in their No. 6 singles match 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (6). In her No. 4 singles match, Wilkinson defeated Arrondo 6-2, 6-4. Bekmetova defeated Marion Lehmann 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5.
