AU-Montgomery whips Winthrop women

The Winthrop women's tennis team lost 6-1 to Auburn-Montgomery on Wednesday at the Winthrop Memorial Courts.

The loss dropped the Lady Eagles to 9-11 while the Lady Senators improved to 18-0.

Auburn-Montgomery clinched the doubles point by winning two of three matches to take an early 1-0 lead. In the No. 3 match, Larisa Bekmetova and Lisa Wilkinson continued their impressive season together as they defeated Dominika Zuzulova and Nadia Lysak 8-2.

Sara Abutovic and Yelena Fadina, playing No. 2 doubles, played a close match against Khady Berthe and Natalie Sienkob but were defeated 8-6.

In singles, Winthrop managed only one victory as Auburn-Montgomery won the remaining five matches. Bekmetova, playing No. 5, defeated Lysak 6-2, 6-4.

In No. 3 singles, Abutovic was defeated 5-7, 7-6, 0-1.

The Lady Eagles will be back in action at noon today, hosting East Tennessee State on Senior Day.

• SOFTBALL POSTPONED -- Winthrop's game against Presbyterian scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday was postponed.

Due to the death of Presbyterian football player Larry Thomas, the schools canceled. Thomas' funeral was held on Wednesday.

The teams have agreed to play a doubleheader at Winthrop beginning at 5 p.m. on April 17. Originally, there was going to be a single game at PC.
