Eagles' Mullins named BSC Pitcher of the Week

Winthrop senior Ryan Mullins was named New Balance Pitcher of the Week after hurling 7 2-3 shutout innings in the Eagles' 3-0 win over High Point over the weekend.

Mullins allowed five hits, striking out four and walking four, and improved to a team-best 4-0. He has not allowed a run in 10 1-3 consecutive innings and has only given up two runs in his four starts.

• WOMEN'S TENNIS -- In Conway, the Winthrop women's tennis team defeated Coastal Carolina 6-1 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center on Sunday to finish undefeated in conference play.

The Lady Eagles improved their record to 11-11 overall and 5-0 in the conference with the victory, while the Chanticleers dropped to 14-10 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

Coastal Carolina took an early 1-0 lead on Winthrop as they clinched the doubles point by winning two out of the three doubles matches. In the No. 2 doubles match, freshman Sara Abutovic and sophomore Yelena Fadina defeated Tina Petkova and Maria Camberos 9-7.

In singles action, the Lady Eagles came back to sweep the Chanticleers by winning all six matches to seal the match victory. Elizaveta Zaytseva, playing No. 1 singles, defeated Amy Pazahanick 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. In the No. 2 singles match, Patricia Coimbra won her match against Lexi Bolesky 6-0, 6-1. Abutovic won her No. 3 singles match against Petkova 6-1, 6-4. Lisa Wilkinson had to hold off Kim Webb in three sets in the No. 4 singles match 6-7, 6-3, 6-0. Larisa Bekmetova, playing No. 5 singles, had to hold off Sofie Ahlberg in three sets to defeat her 6-7, 6-1, 6-0. In the No. 6 singles match, Paula Pereira defeated Camberos 7-5, 6-4.

Winthrop will be back in action on Friday as it begins play in the Big South Conference Women's Tennis Tournament as the Eagles take on the winner of the Charleston Southern/High Point winner at 10:30 a.m.

• MEN'S TENNIS -- In Lynchburg, Va., the Winthrop men's tennis team dropped its final regular-season match to Liberty 4-3 at Eshbeshade-Hershey Tennis Court.

The loss dropped the Eagles' record to 10-11 overall and 2-4 in the conference, while Liberty improved to 7-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Winthrop fell behind 1-0 early as Liberty clinched the doubles point by winning two out of the three doubles matches. Rodrigo Santos and Arthur Takahashi won their No. 1 doubles match against Sebastian Pena and Rafael Riso 8-3.

In singles action, the Eagles made a late charge against the Flames, but fell short by winning only three out of the six matches. In the No. 1 singles match, Santos defeated Pena 6-3, 6-4. Takahashi, playing No. 2 singles, won his match against Jarda Trojan in three sets 4-6, 7-6(4), 1-0.

Marcin Majchrzak, playing No. 4 singles, won his second straight match as he defeated Leandro Schujmann 4-6, 6-1, retired.

Winthrop will be back in action on Thursday as it begins play in the Big South Conference Men's Tennis Tournament at 2:30 p.m. against Charleston Southern.
