The Winthrop softball team received a vote in the final USA Today/NFCA NCAA Division I Top 25 poll released on Tuesday, following the conclusion of the Women's College World Series.
The Lady Eagles (36-19), who made their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Regionals after capturing back-to-back Big South Conference championships, finished the season tied at No. 36 with Auburn, Hofstra and Jacksonville State.
Winthrop will look to defend its title for a third straight year in 2009. The Eagles return eight of 10 starters.
• TRACK AND FIELD -- High jumper Jason Williams finished tied for 20th in the preliminaries of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, clearing a 6-foot, 8.75 inch leap but falling short of the 6-10.75 that sent jumpers to the finals.
