With the regular season complete, the Winthrop women's soccer team will concentrate on the 2008 Big South Conference Tournament.
Coach Melissa Heinz' Eagles received the No. 6 overall seed in the tournament after finishing with a 3-4-2 conference record and 8-9-2 record overall. The team will play No. 3 seed VMI at 11 a.m. on Thursday morning at Vert Soccer Stadium in High Point, N.C.
Winthrop was picked sixth in the preseason poll. VMI (5-3-1 and 9-9-1) may have been the biggest surprise in the conference by garnering the No. 3 seed after being picked last in the preseason poll.
The Keydets blanked Winthrop 3-0 back on Oct. 1. The loss was the second of three straight setbacks to start the league schedule.
Heinz made a statement after the third loss saying her team would finish 5-3 in the Big South. A bold statement.
Winthrop responded with three consecutive wins, including home victories against Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb, followed by a win at Coastal Carolina. The Eagles tied at Charleston Southern, tied Liberty at home and ended the regular season with a double overtime loss to Radford.
Winthrop's leading scorers are senior Erin Foote and freshman Chelsea Tidwell with four goals a piece.
Coastal Carolina, the regular season champion, captured the No. 1 seed after finishing with a 6-2-1 conference record. Radford and VMI finished the regular season with 16 points apiece, but the Highlanders defeated the Keydets 4-1 earlier this season to earn the No. 2 seed. Charleston Southern was awarded the No. 4 seed after finishing the conference season with a 4-2-3 record.
Tournament host High Point received the No. 5 seed with a 3-2-4 conference record. UNC Asheville claimed the No. 7 seed after going 3-6 in conference play and Gardner-Webb captured the No. 8 seed with their 2-5-2 conference mark.
The tournament, which starts Thursday, will conclude on Sunday with the championship match.
