Winthrop volleyball coach leaves for Georgia job

Winthrop volleyball coach Joel McCartney has resigned to take over at theUniversity of Georgia. Officials at Georgia announced they had finalized thedeal today.

McCartney led the Eagles to five straight Big South Conference championshipsand five NCAA tournaments. In 2006, his sixth year at the helm, he guidedWinthrop to a school-record 34 wins (only three losses) and another BigSouth title and NCAA trip.

The Eagles posted the second-most wins among NCAA Division I programs thisyear and McCartney finished his tenure with a 167-49 record, including 74-10in the Big South. He is the school’s all-time winningest coach and has thehighest winning percentage (.773) among Big South coaches.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank Dr. (Anthony) DiGiorgio and TomHickman for affording me an unbelievable opportunity to lead the Winthropprogram for the past six years,” McCartney said in a statement. “It has beena wonderful ride and I am very proud of what the Eagles have accomplishedduring this time.”
