Jenna Kasmarik scored six goals Thursday evening to lead the Winthrop lacrosse team to a 14-12 victory over the Michigan Wolverines in the first-ever women’s lacrosse game played in Michigan Stadium.

With the victory, the Eagles improved to 3-5 overall while Michigan fell to 0-7.

Freshman Paige Jenkins got the scoring going for the Eagles less than two minutes into the contest with her first career goal.

Michigan tied it up less than a minute later, but Winthrop was able to take five of the next six with two coming from Jenna Kasmarik, two from Abigail Blevins and one from Shannon Gallagher to give the Eagles a 6-2 lead. The Wolverines netted their third of the half with just over four minutes on the clock and the Eagles closed out with a goal from Gallagher to take a 7-3 lead into the break.

Winthrop started strong to begin the second half with goals from Kasmarik and sophomore Logan McCarthy to put the Eagles up 9-3 less than five minutes into the half. Michigan didn’t go quietly as the Wolverines scored four of the next five to pull within three at 10-7 with 15:16 remaining in the game.

The Eagles responded well from the offensive push by Michigan with back-to-back goals from McCarthy and Kasmarik to push the Winthrop lead back to five. The Wolverines continued to get within three but it wasn’t until less than two minutes remaining that they got within two at 14-12, but couldn’t climb any closer.

Kasmarik’s six goals came on seven shots as she also picked up four ground balls and three draw controls. McCarthy finished with three goals while Gallagher and Abigail Blevins each netted two. Hayley Krause led the team with five draw controls and also recorded an assist.

The Eagles will continue their road trip on Sunday in Milwaukee, Wis., when Winthrop takes on Marquette at 1 p.m. ET.
