Senior attacker Jenna Kasmarik has been named the Big South Preseason Attacking Player of the Year and the Winthrop lacrosse team was predicted to finish second in the league according to a Tuesday release from the conference.
The Eagles also had junior Shannon Gallagher and senior Alyssa Blevins named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
Kasmarik, who earned First-Team All-Conference honors last season, led the Big South with 67 goals and was second in the NCAA with 3.72 goals per game. Her 4.11 points per game ranked her third in the conference.
Gallagher, a junior midfielder from Silver Spring, MD, is a two-time selection to the All-Conference First Team in 2013 and 2014. She finished second on the team and fifth in the conference with 44 goals last season and was fourth in the conference with 3.68 points per game.
Blevins, a senior defender from Bel Air, MD, has earned two Second-Team All-Conference honors in her two years as an Eagle. She is a centerpiece of the Eagle defense which allowed just over 12 goals per contest last season.
Winthrop was voted by the league’s coaches to finish second this upcoming season behind only High Point. The Eagles received one first-place vote while the Panthers garnered the other seven. Winthrop was voted just ahead of the Longwood Lancers and Liberty rounded out the top four. Coastal Carolina was predicted fifth followed by Campbell, Presbyterian and conference newcomer Gardner-Webb.
The Eagles will start their season on the road at Kennesaw State at 4 p.m. on February 10. Winthrop will open its home season on Friday, February 13 against Ohio State at 6 p.m.
