Winthrop tennis players pick up Big South awards

Winthrop’s men’s tennis team has received Big South Conference accolades for matches played Feb. 16-22.

Steven Patrick, a junior from Knoxville, Tenn., has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men’s Player of the Week. This marks consecutive weeks that a player from the Winthrop men’s tennis team has been selected as Player of the Week.

And Ruben Franzanti, a freshman from Antibes, France, has been selected as the Big South Conference Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.

Both players were undefeated last week posting 1-0 singles and 1-0 doubles record while helping boost the Eagles to a 4-3 victory over the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders. Paired with Tremayne Mitchell at the No. 2 doubles spot, Patrick topped the Highlanders Andres Alban and Jan Cimrman 6-1. Patrick also edged Amaud Holl in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles position.

Alongside Michael Chen at the No. 3 doubles slot, Franzanti was victorious over Richard Rangga and Luka Kaic 6-3. Franzanti also downed Kaic at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-1.

This marks Patrick’s and Franzanti’s first conference honors this season. The Winthrop Eagles’ men’s tennis team will return to the court for a match against the Georgia State Panthers this Friday, Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
