Winthrop softball’s Adidas Tournament reshuffling schedule on the fly

Winthrop softball is set to host the 2015 Adidas Tournament but weather conditions have forced several changes in the weekend’s schedule.

In addition to games being played at Winthrop, there will be six games held at Cyrill Stadium on the campus of USC Upstate to help the visiting teams get in as many games as possible.

There have been significant changes to the matchups, dates and times of the original schedule that was set. Winthrop will now open up the tournament on Friday, Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. against Wagner. The Eagles will play two games on Saturday and will start with a 2 p.m. game against Hartford, followed by a game at 4 p.m. against Austin Peay. The Eagles will wrap up the weekend with a noon game on Sunday against Harvard. All four of Winthrop’s games will be played on Terry Field.

This tournament dates back to 1994 when it began as the Ringor Invitational and changed to the Adidas Tournament in 2006. The weather has not cooperated with this event in recent years as the 2003 and 2009 tournaments were washed out and 2008, 2010 and 2014 had to make adjustments as well.

Winthrop is 5-9 on the year after opening the season with three straight tournaments on the road. The Eagles have won seven of their last 10 home openers with two of the losses coming to South Carolina and Virginia. In 2014 the Eagles won their first eight games at Terry Field and finished the season 16-8 at home.

The Eagles have averaged 5.5 runs per game so far this season and the offense has been balanced. Leading the team in batting is sophomore Maddie Antone with a .442 average as she also has 14 runs, five doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI. Senior Sara Allen has been impressive at the plate so far with a .357 average, two runs, a home run and nine RBI. Sophomore Paige Haley has become the team’s leadoff hitter the last eight games. Haley is batting .294 on the year with seven runs, three doubles and five RBI. Antone and Haley were both named to the Cougar Classic All-Tournament Team last weekend.
