Winthrop volleyball rallied from a 2-1 deficit to force a fifth set, but fell 3-2 to Morehead State, Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Eagle Challenge.
Final scores: Winthrop 2, Morehead State 3 (25-17, 23-25, 19-25, 25-19, 6-15)
▪ Senior Keaupono Fey won All-Tournament Team at the Eagle Challenge.
▪ Sophomore Sydney Gunter continues to be hot as she had 17 kills with a .400 hitting percent.
▪ Junior Carlie Skelton led the defense as she had 20 digs and two Services Ace.
Set 1: Winthrop and Morehead State went back and forth to start the first set until Winthrop went on a 6-0 run to make it 20-1. Morehead State fought back but were unable to capitalize as Winthrop went on to win the first set 25-17 behind a kill by Ara Wilson.
Set 2: After Morehead State starting the set 7-3, Winthrop went on a 4-0 run to tie it up. Winthrop took the lead and was up 23-19, but Morehead State finished on a 6-0 run to win the second set 25-23.
Set 3: The Eagles opened the third set on a 4-0 run Morehead State continued to add points against Winthrop to make it 23-14. Winthrop went on a 5-0 run but were unable to make the comeback as Morehead State won 25-19.
Set 4: The Eagles started off weak as they fell 4-1 to start the set. After battling back and forth the Eagles moved away from Morehead State to take a 20-12. Morehead State battled back but came up short to fall 25-19 to Winthrop.
Set 5: Morehead State took the fifth set easily as they started on a 8-3 run and finished on a 7-3 run to beat Winthrop in five.
The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. when they take on Wofford College in their home opener.
