INDIAN LAND — Chesterfield’s pass-happy offense was efficient but its defense stuffed Indian Land’s running game and shut out the Warriors 35-0 Friday, bringing a sour ending to Senior Night.
The Golden Rams’ defense swarmed Indian Land for most of the night, highlighted by a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the game to demoralize the Warriors.
Chesterfield coach Steve Taneyhill gave his offensive and defensive teams good marks for their performances.
“Even though it was late in the game, any time your defense scores for you, it’s a real positive,” Taneyhill said. “They gave the offense some opportunities to score and have really played well all season.”

As expected, the Rams (6-2, 2-1 Region 3-A) came out throwing, but Indian Land’s defense held them in check until late in the half. The Warriors’ offense hurt itself throughout the contest with fumbles and penalties, one nullifiying a touchdown run from Karl Watson.
Chesterfield scored on the series after the penalty when Nick Dixon flipped a screen pass to tailback Simpson Miller, who broke two tackles and raced to the end zone from 49 yards out.
The Rams’ defense set up another score late in the half when it pressured Indian Land into a short punt. Dixon hit Robert Sowell for a 3-yard score, then tossed a conversion pass to give the Rams a 14-0 halftime lead.
Indian Land (2-6, 1-2) moved the ball well early in the thrird quarter, but Drew Carlton’s 30-yard field goal sailed right and Chesterfield’s defense didn’t allow another scoring opportunity.
Chesterfield’s final score came when safety Patrick Barefoot stole a short pass attempt and outran Indian Land’s tacklers to the end zone.
