It's August and that means state tournament time for American Legion baseball.
Two Herald-area teams are among the eight-team field. Rock Hill Post 34 will face Lancaster Post 31 in the nightcap of today's opening round.
Rock Hill is the top seed in the tournament.
The tournament will be played at The Winthrop Ballpark, giving the city a 1-2 punch after hosting the NSA World Series last week.
Winthrop baseball coach Joe Hudak is happy to host the tournament.
"We were approached last year about hosting the tournament and we said we would love to do it," he said. "When we built the stadium this was what we had in mind, to be involved in the community."
Hudak was finishing a baseball camp this week at the stadium. The five-day tournament is another opportunity for him to showcase Winthrop athletics and get a look at some talent.
"We are familiar with some of the teams. We're very proud of the Rock Hill team, of course," Hudak said. "They not only qualified for the tournament but they are deserving of the No. 1 seed."
Rock Hill pitcher Cam Walters (4-0, 2.33 ERA) will play for Winthrop next season. Hudak says the left-hander has a good curveball and can come in and contribute as a freshman if he throws strikes.
Four games are on the schedule today. Florence Post 1 and Gaffney Post 109 play the first game at 10 a.m. Gaffney qualified for the tournament with a 17-7 win over Lancaster in the decisive Game 5 of a best-of-five series last week.
Sumter Post 15 and Dalzell-Shaw Post 175 match up in the 1 p.m. contest. Charlie Taylor ripped two home runs and drove in six to lead Dalzell-Shaw past Orangeburg and into the tourney.
Richland Post 6 and Georgetown Post 114 play at 4 p.m. Georgetown is making its first trip to the state tournament and is led by nine-game winner Wesley Welchel.
Single-game tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. The stadium will be cleared following each game. Tournament passes can be purchased for $25 for adults and $15 for students.
