Stallions push record to 3-0

AIKEN -- South Pointe wide receiver Charles Holmes caught five passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns as the Stallions improve to 3-0 with a 14-6 win at South Aiken.

Holmes, a junior, hauled in touchdown passes of 71 and 58 yards from quarterback Stephon Gilmore. It was Holmes' first touchdowns of the year.

South Pointe had amassed more than 700 yards rushing in their first two games of the year, but South Aiken clamped down on running back Devon Wherry and Gilmore in the first half. The duo combined for just 42 yards on the ground in the first half.

"This is a sign of a good team, when we can play poorly and win," Stallions coach Bobby Carroll said. "This team is built around the run. Honestly, South Aiken coach Robert Wrightenberry has a very good defensive team. No one has moved the ball against them.

"We are going to have to throw it some this year. Holmes had a wonderful game."

A South Pointe miscue led to South Aiken's only touchdown. Gilmore and running back Bobby Hemphill collided on the exchange at the Stallions' 11 yard line. South Aiken recovered the fumble at the four and scored immediately. However, a high snap resulted in a failed PAT kick, leaving the Thoroughbreds with a 6-0 lead late in the second quarter.

South Pointe went to the long ball as soon as they got the ball back. Gilmore dropped back to pass from his 29, pump faked, then threw a perfect pass to Holmes along the South Pointe sidelines. Holmes outran two defenders to the end zone to complete the 71 yard play. Corey Rawls' kick gave the Stallions a 7-6 lead with 1:43 left in the half.

"We worked on some pass routes this week in practice," Holmes said. "We knew South Aiken would bite on the stop-and-go route."

Carroll said his coaching staff worked on the pass offense a lot more this past week.

"Our motto this year is 'No excuses,'" Carroll said. "We could have hung our heads when the running game wasn't working, but we found a way to win."

Wherry finished with 85 yards on 18 carries. Gilmore threw for a season high 233 yards on 8-of-15 passing.
