Cycs blank Dreher

COLUMBIA -- Once-beaten Chester slumbered through much of the game and played as if its mind was a mile away but overpowered young and injury-riddled Dreher 36-0 in a Region 3-AAA football game at Columbia's Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

The Cyclones rang up their seventh win in nine games without breaking a sweat. The Blue Devils, with two starters out following an accident, fell to 1-8 and remained winless in the region.

Chester took the lead on its second possession, driving 72 yards in 11 plays to Terrell Springs' 4-yard run with only six seconds left in the first period. Eugene McCaskill ran a 2-point conversion, and the issue was never in doubt.

C.C. Whitlock and McCaskill teamed up to score three times in the second quarter. Whitlock, headed for the Shrine Bowl, ran 3 yards and then tossed scoring passes to McCaskill covering 45 and 15 yards.

That was enough to give the Cyclones, ranked eight among Class AAA powers, a 28-0 halftime bulge, and they coasted from there. Perhaps as little too easy for coach Victor Floyd.

"We played extremely spotty tonight," Floyd said. "We were not sharp at all, but we got the win and didn't get anybody hurt. That's what we came here to do."

Chester's offense finished balanced with 142 yards on the ground and 134 in the air with Whitlock and McCaskil sharing the quarterback duties. McCaskill, who rushed for 61 yards, was very effective on the option, and Whitlock scrambled around for 42 yards.

Penalties prevented the Cyclones' total from being larger. Chester drew 14 flags for 105 yards, giving Dreher unearned first downs and costing themselves several quality plays.
