Strong special teams help Lions prevail over determined Warriors

FORT MILL -- The winless Indian Land Warriors were once again on the losing end, with a 27-0 home loss to Region 3-A foe Lewisville on Friday.

Even though the scoreboard did not reflect a Warrior win, Indian Land coach Mike Mayer chose to point to several huge moral victories against the first-place Lions.

"This was one of our best efforts of the season," Mayer said after leading the spirited Warriors in a postgame chant. "We made mistakes in the kicking game, but I cannot say enough about our effort.

"It could have easily been a 7-0 game; it was the best that our defense played all year. We yielded only one touchdown to Lewisville where they actually drove the ball down the field."

The Warriors stood toe-to-toe against the Lions, who improved to 6-3 overall and are tied for the Region 3-A lead at 4-0. Indian Land gained only 96 total yards but contained a potent Lewisville offense to 160 yards, 109 on the ground.

The major difference came in the kicking game. Lewisville converted three Warriors special-teams miscues into 21 points.

With the game scoreless after one quarter, the Lions got on the board when Isaiah Johnson field a punt and raced down the left sideline for a 70-yard scoring run with 4:01 left to halftime.

The next Lions points resulted from a 56-yard drive, keyed by a 42-yard pass from Bubba Young to Antwan Robinson to the Warriors' 22. Four plays later, Dennis Dunham crossed the end zone with a 5-yard run.

The final two Lewisville scores resulted from Warrior punts, which netted 6 and 0 yards, respectively.

The Lions took over deep in Indian Land territory and cashed in on short drives with Elijah Johnson plunging 1 yard to paydirt and Tierrel Simpson running 10 yards for the score.

"Give Indian Land all the credit in the world; they may have been 0-8 coming into this game, but they really fought hard tonight," Lions coach Floyd Drum said. "We did not play our best, but it was good to come out with the win."
