Three of four Herald-area teams won in the first round of the Class AAAA Upper State wrestling duals and advanced to tonight's second round.
Fort Mill (18-1) beat Mauldin 49-25 and hosts White Knoll, which eliminated Westside 44-27.
Rock Hill (27-2) and South Pointe (15-4) have road matches. Rock Hill, a 45-24 winner over Boiling Springs, travels to Greenwood, which had a first-round bye.
South Pointe, which upset Dorman 35-29, has its second straight road match. The Stallions go to Lexington, a 63-18 winner over Wren.
The third round of the duals is Monday, but the Region 3-AAAA individuals tournament is at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fort Mill.
The top four finishers in each of the 14 weight classes advance to the Class AAAA Upper State tournament on Feb. 15-16 at Hillcrest.
Wrestlers will qualify for the state individuals tournament on Feb. 22-23 at Irmo.
• SOCCER: The South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association has released its preseason soccer polls and the lists included three Herald-area teams.
Northwestern is No. 2 in the Class AAAA boys poll behind No. 1 Spring Valley, which defeated the Trojans in last year's state championship. Fort Mill's boys are No. 14.
Fort Mill's girls are No. 7 in Class AAAA.
• CHESTER AWARDS: Chester's athletics department celebrated its fall sports teams last week.
The varsity football team and coaches received commemorative watches in honor of making the Class AAA state championship game.
The following athletes were presented awards for their individual achievements:
• ALL-STAR HOOPS: The Carolina's Classic All-Star Basketball Weekend left Rock Hill and Winthrop Coliseum after last year's games and has found new homes.
The event, which featured the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association's North-South games and the North Carolina vs. South Carolina games during its stay in Rock Hill, has been split.
The North-South game will be played at North Myrtle Beach on March 15. The North Carolina vs. South Carolina games are scheduled for April 5 at Bobcats Arena.
