Fort Mill hoops tourney starts Friday

Fort Mill High School will host the second annual Fort Mill Pre-season Invitational Basketball Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 28 and 29.

Girls' teams from Fort Mill, Rock Hill, Bamberg-Ehrhardt and Box Hill Academy (Melbourne, Australia) will compete. The boys teams are Fort Mill, York, JT Hoggard (Wilmington, NC), and Box Hill Academy.

Girls games begin Friday at 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., with boys games at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 per day.

• FOOD DRIVE: William "Bump'' Roddey, a former Northwestern High School football player and local community organizer, will sponsoring a "Can Good" food drive at the Northwestern and South Pointe High School football games on Friday.

The drive benefits four local charities/food pantries. The goal is to raise 2008 can goods at each stadium for a total of 4016 can goods or more.

The local charities include the Children's Home, Pilgrims' Inn, Ron King's Feed the Hungry Ministries, and the Soup Kitchen on Crawford Road in Rock Hill.

Because of this lagging economy and with Christmas around the corner, our local agencies need our help because donations have been drastically reduced. But demand for help has almost doubled. This is an opportunity for our teachers and students, elected officials, local citizens and sports fans headed to a game to do a charitable deed. And if you are not going to a game, citizens are encouraged to stop by one of the stadiums and drop off a few can goods.

Monetary donations will be accepted, but monetary donations can be made directly to any of the organizations. Large food donations can be arranged for pick-up by calling Roddey at (803) 984 8033. For More information, contact Ron King at 417-3881, Children's Home at 328-8871 or Pilgrims' Inn at 327-0999.
