Northwestern's Justin Worley and BJ Boyd connected for three touchdowns to help the Trojans run away from Blythewood 36-24 Friday night at District Three Stadium.
Worley finished with five touchdowns and was very efficient through the air against the Bengals. He was 29-for-38 for season-high 365 yards. Boyd finished with 46 yards receiving on five catches.
While Worley and Boyd connected several times for big plays, they were not outdone by Northwestern's defensive line. Led by Roderick Byers and Gerald Dixon, the Trojans defensive unit stood strong throughout the second half to slow down the Bengals comeback attempt.
After the Trojans' only turnover--a Worley interception with 5:10 left in the third--Byers and Dixon teamed up to cause one of the more bizarre plays of the game. With Bengals' quarterback Demetric Gray scrambling in his end zone, Dixon appeared to force a fumble that was recovered by Byers for a touchdown.
The touchdown signal was given, but after a brief discussion the officials overturned the score and awarded Northwestern a safety.
The Trojans (4-0) took a 23-17 lead after and never looked back.
"I thought our offense in the third quarter was unbelievable. We got them stopped a couple times. We knew Sunday (while watching tape) they had great athletes," said Northwestern coach Jimmy Wallace.
