High school notes: Clash of the Carolinas rosters released

Rosters for the 2014 Clash of the Carolinas have been released. The annual soccer all-star game between high school standouts from North and South Carolina will feature six locals, including four boys and two girls.

Fort Mill's Jonathan Cutrone, South Pointe's Josh Reid and Kyle Dix and Northwestern's Julian Welborn will compete in the boys' game, while Fort Mill's Cassidy Parker and Lancaster's Frances Whitesides will be the area's female representatives. The game is set for July 12 at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston.

Brady Allardice - Academic Magnet, goalkeeper; Alex Bourland- Wando, forward; Chandler Corley - Chapin, forward; Johnny Cutrone - Fort Mill, midfielder; Christian Deany - River Bluff, defender; Raffael Dirrigl - Christ Church, midfielder; Kyle Dix - South Pointe, defender; Dillon Garcia - Blythewood, midfielder; Garrett Glaze - James Island, defender; Keaton Hinze - JL Mann, forward; Brennan Koslow - St. Joseph's, midfielder; Andrew Martens - Wando, defender; Grayson Raynor - Riverside, midfielder; Josh Reid - South Pointe, midfielder; Tyler Rider - JL Mann, midfielder; Adrian Thompson - Spring Valley, defender; Landon Uldrick - Greenwood, goalkeeper; Julian Welborn - Northwestern, forward.

Local pair named Big South baseball players of the week

Charleston Southern’s Alex Tomasovich has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week, while Charleston Southern’s Denis Buckley and Austin Kerr of Coastal Carolina was tabbed The Crons Brand Co-Pitchers of the Week for games played April 14-20, the League announced today.

Tomasovich, a senior from Tega Cay who played at Fort Mill High School, was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the Bucs’ first win over the Gamecocks since 2003 as the Bucs defeated then No. 6 South Carolina, 4-1. He had a sacrifice fly to score teammate Bobby Ison in the first and followed with an RBI single in the third to plate half the Bucs’ runs in the win. He added a 5-for-9 weekend against Asheville with three runs and three RBI in CSU’s two wins. He finished the week 7-for-12 (.583) with two doubles and five RBI was the Bucs went 3-0. He was also strong in the field as he made a two diving stabs in the hole at third base to take away Bulldog hits on April 17.

Kerr, a junior from Chester, who played at Chester High School, pitched Coastal Carolina’s first complete game shutout since 2011 to lead the Chanticleers to the 4-0 win over Presbyterian College on April. 18. He retired the first 13 batters he faced as he posted a career-high seven strikeouts in his outing. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and allowed just two hits in the contest.
