On the day that Fort Mill boys’ basketball team entered the 4A state rankings for the first time in a few years, the Yellow Jackets fell at home to Northwestern 50-39.
The Trojans (7-9, 3-3 in Region 3-4A) handed Fort Mill (12-4, 4-2) its only other loss in Region 3-4A play back in December, and Tuesday night they repeated the feat.
“It is a tough matchup for us and basketball a lot of times is about matchups,” said Fort Mill coach Dwayne Hartsoe. “They had a lot to do with it the way they play defense, but we didn’t shoot the ball very well.”
Larry Davis’ team has been inconsistent at times this season - a product of a youthful backcourt - but Tuesday night gave him reason to hope that his Trojans had turned the corner.

“That remains to be seen,” he said with a grin. “Coming into the year, I really liked our chemistry and what we had out on the floor. But we’ve had some setbacks with some guys and we had to play some of our younger guys. Now our team is starting to gel together and hopefully this win will give us the confidence that we need to finish the region out.”
Northwestern seized control of the game in the third quarter, out-scoring the hosts 18-9. Myliek Durham gave the Trojans a spark off the bench with a steal and a bucket, before finding Malcolm Anthony for a 3 just before the end of the third quarter. Northwestern grew its lead in the fourth, holding the Yellow Jackets to just seven points. Jaquavious Clowney - Jadeveon’s cousin - led the Trojans with 11 points; they play Rock Hill Friday.

Defensive effort keeps Trojan girls perfect in region
Northwestern’s girls stayed unbeaten in Region 3-4A play, topping Fort Mill 38-29 Tuesday night. John Bramlett’s team (8-10, 6-0 in region) is holding its region foes to less than 35 points per game thus far.
“Our girls take a lot of pride in playing defense, from the top all the way to the end of the bench, and even our managers,” said Bramlett after the game. “We know we’re limited in scoring, so we’ve got to get stops.”
The visiting Trojans jumped on Fort Mill from the offing, holding Brett Childers’ Yellow Jackets to three first quarter points. Freshman Makenna Thompson led a balanced scoring effort for the Trojans with nine points. Fort Mill’s Ally Abbott led all scorers with 12.
