Fort Mill’s Brett Netzer was picked 101st overall on Tuesday in the third round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft, becoming the Yellow Jackets’ highest-selected player in school history.
The Red Sox nabbed the former Yellow Jacket, who enjoyed a sterling three years with the Charlotte 49ers. The scheduled signing bonus for the 101st pick is over $530,000.
Netzer, a 6-foot, 192-pound infielder from Tega Cay, hit .351 for his career at Charlotte and is the fourth-highest 49er drafted in the school’s history. Netzer hit .384 as a sophomore and .329 as a junior, smacking five home runs in each season and earning second team All-Conference USA honors both years.
Two other former Fort Mill Yellow Jackets have been picked in the MLB Draft in the last 17 years. Kevin Woods was picked in the fourth round of the 2013 draft by the Florida Marlins. And Charlie Lisk was taken in the 24th round by the Chicago White Sox earlier this century.
