Rock Hill High’s pursuit of a 19th wrestling state title is on hold for the moment.

The Bearcats were set to face Fort Dorchester in the 5A title bout Feb. 10 at Airport High School in Columbia, but that match has been paused while a Fort Dorchester grappler’s eligibility -- it’s not clear whether it’s academic or residential yet -- is scrutinized.

Rock Hill athletic director Bill Warren confirmed that Saturday’s match is in limbo, but didn’t want to comment further until the South Carolina High School League had issued a statement.

Fort Dorchester dropped River Bluff in Wednesday night’s Lower State championship match. If the Patriots wrestler is ruled ineligible, River Bluff would advance to the state championship match against Rock Hill.

The Bearcats handled Byrnes on Wednesday to return to the state finals.

Bearcats coach Cain Beard said only that Rock Hill principal Ozzie Ahl called him earlier Thursday to inform him Saturday’s match had been postponed and that there would be an appeal on Monday with the other team involved.

“It gives us a couple of extra days to prepare and talk about some strategy with other members of my staff and really get ready for either team.”

Beard obviously didn’t know when his team will wrestle the championship match. But he said the best scenario would be next Wednesday and the worst case “probably a week and a half from now.”
