High school roundup: Gaffney leads Fleischer Golf Tournament

Gaffney leads the Fleischer Invitational Tournament after the first round on Friday at the Rock Hill Country Club.

Gaffney’s team score was 300 in the opening round. Boiling Springs is seven strokes back in second place. Dorman, Clover, Blythewood, and Rock Hill round out the top six in the 12-team field. Trent Phillips of Boiling Springs is the individual leader after one round of play. He fired a 69, which was four strokes better than Matt Teaster of Spartanburg. Miles Baldwin of Northwestern and Andrew White of Clover are tied for seventh after 18 holes. Both shot opening rounds of 76. Clover’s Jake Rowe is 10th after an opening round of 77. The second round of play begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Fort Mill 3, Nation Ford 0: Fort Mill scored a pair of goals in the second half and toppled host Nation Ford 3-0 in a Region 3-4A match. Erin Wolfe scored the only first half goal to give Fort Mill a 1-0 lead. Annika Ford and Katie Phillips scored the goals in the second half for Fort Mill. Meredith Christopher had two assists for Fort Mill, which is still unbeaten in region play.

Clover 1, Rock Hill 0: Clover scored the only goal of the game in the second half at Rock Hill.

LATE THURSDAY

BASEBALL

South Pointe 3, Lewisville 1: South Pointe scored in the bottom of the eighth inning and edged Lewisville 3-2 in a non-region game at South Pointe. Spencer Bala drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded single. Bo Taylor and Stephen Thompson each had a pair of hits to lead South Pointe. Will Dunn pitched a complete game to pick up the win.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Fort Mill 9, Nation Ford 8 (OT): Fort Mill edged Nation Ford 9-8 in overtime at Nation Ford.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Nation Ford 5, Fort Mill 1: Nation Ford won four singles matches and one doubles contest and topped Fort Mill 5-1 in a Region 3-4A match at Nation Ford. Fort Mill is 6-5 on the year.

Gaffney 152, Northwestern 163: Gaffney defeated Northwestern 152-163 in a Region 3-4A match at Waterford Golf Course. Miles Baldwin and Wes Wilson each carded a 40 to lead Northwestern (5-3). Brandon Lathan had a 41, while Thomas Gettys fired a 42. Corbet Warren finished with a 43, and Spencer Jackson had a 51.
