High school football preview capsules for Week 9

York at Fort Mill

Coaches: FM - Ed Susi, eighth year; Y - Bobby Carroll, fourth year

Records: FM - 7-2, 3-1 in Region 3-4A; Y - 8-1, 3-1 in Region 3-4A

Last week: Fort Mill beat Rock Hill 20-19; York beat Nation Ford 44-20

Last meeting: York won 56-24 (2013)

Points scored/allowed: FM - 35.2/20.3; Y - 36.8/21.3

Rankings: York is ranked No. 6 in S.C. Prep Media 4A poll, No. 9 in Charlotte Observer Sweet 16

Players to watch: Y - Sr. DB Mitchell Trotter, Jr. DL Devionne Chalk, Soph. WR/DB Shandon Cobb, Soph. ATH Wally Wilmore, Sr. DL Ethan Whitesides; FM - Sr. LB Logan Yeager, Sr. LB Dan Gast, Sr. ATH Chandler Kryst, Soph. RB/DB Ronnie Hughes, Sr. DT Aaron Patterson

TV/radio: FM 107.1

Need to know: The winner of this game Friday edges closer to a home playoff game, especially if Clover beats Gaffney. Fort Mill will need to eat up clock, which it’s perfectly capable of doing, while York needs to get back to its big-play-making ways. Kyron Schrouder and Wally Wilmore are probably the most dangerous receiving duo in the area, and the Cougars need to get them in the flats and put Fort Mill’s tackling to the test. It remains to be seen if the Jackets can fly with the Cougars, who have won five out of six in the series.

Gaffney at Clover

Coaches: G - Dan Jones, fifth year; C - Chad Smith, second year

Records: G - 2-6, 2-1 in Region 3-4A; C - 2-6, 1-2 in Region 3-4A

Last week: Gaffney was idle; Clover lost to Northwestern 42-7

Last meeting: Gaffney won 55-3 (2011)

Points scored/allowed: G - 27.3/34.3; C - 21.1/30.3

Rankings: N/A

Players to watch: G - Sr. DT Eb Covington, Sr. RB Jalen Sims, Sr. OL T.J Haney, Jr. WR Scott McCluney; C - Soph. RB Willie Clark, Sr. OL Jacob Church, Jr. DE Elijah Plummer, Soph. FB/LB Tanner Tolson

TV/radio: WRHI.com, or 9:45 p.m. play-back on FM 104.1

Need to know: This is the big one for both of these teams, as the rest of Region 3-4A has cleaved itself into the have’s and the have-not’s. A win for Clover would put them in pole position for the school’s first playoff berth since 2010, while a win for Gaffney would ensure the Indians’ return to the postseason despite a nightmare campaign so far. If Clover can get ahead early, it could be a long night for the visitors from Gaffney.

Northwestern at Nation Ford

Coaches: NW - Kyle Richardson, fourth year; NF - Michael Allen, fifth year

Records: NW - 6-2, 3-0 in Region 3-4A; NF - 2-6, 0-3 in Region 3-4A

Last week: Northwestern beat Clover 42-7; Nation Ford lost to York 44-20

Last meeting: Northwestern won 63-18 (2013)

Points scored/allowed: NW - 37.3/25; NF - 32.3/49.6

Rankings: Northwestern is ranked No. 7 in S.C. Prep Media 4A poll, No. 11 in Charlotte Observer Sweet 16

Players to watch: NW - Sr. LB Gabe Gresham, Jr. LB Trae’von Hinton, Jr. DB T.C. Caldwell, Jr. ATH Julian Shockley, Sr. OL Shahee Fernanders; NF - Sr. RB Keshaun McClure, Jr. QB Cole Martin, Sr. DB Colt Taylor, Sr. WR/DB Ervin Lassiter, Fr. LB Vinnie Catan

TV/radio: WRHI-FM 94.3/AM 1340

Need to know: Nation Ford missed junior pass-catcher Hank Tuipulotu last week as he sat out with a back injury. The Falcons will hope to get him back this week as they try and keep pace with a Northwestern offense that averages 40 points per game in region play. It’s another daunting assignment for a Nation Ford defense that was led by freshman Vinnie Catan’s 16 tackles last week. The Falcons are 0-6 all-time against the Trojans.

Broome at South Pointe

Coaches: B - Jet Turner, third year; SP - Strait Herron, fourth year

Records: B - 7-1, 3-0 in Region 3-3A; SP - 5-3, 3-0 in Region 3-3A

Last week: Broome beat Chester 58-44; South Pointe beat Lancaster 14-7

Last meeting: Never played

Points scored/allowed: B - 39.1/30; SP - 25.1/21.9

Rankings: Broome is ranked No. 6 in S.C. Prep Media 3A poll; South Pointe is ranked No. 7 in S.C. Prep Media 3A poll

Players to watch: B - Sr. LB Bauveir Jackson (Shrine Bowl pick), Soph. LB D’Marco Jackson, Sr. RB Desmond Anderson, Sr. RB/LB Travis Jeter; SP - Sr. WR Deshawn Davis, Jr. LB Nick Yearwood, Sr. LB Ty Barber, Sr. LB Demon Davis, Jr. QB Greg Ruff

TV/radio: FM 104.1

Need to know: South Pointe has been difficult to put a finger on this season, as the Stallions have truly been a work in progress. Friday’s game will be a gut-check for Strait Herron’s team as they face a running attack that hasn’t been stopped this season. Since the school opened, South Pointe has been known for producing turnovers and it needs to do that Friday to stunt the Centurions’ momentum and give the Stallion defense time on the sidelines. This is South Pointe’s most important game of the season.

Clinton at Chester

Coaches: Cl - Scott King, fifth year; Ch - Anthony Sterling, fifth year

Records: Cl - 1-7, 1-2 in Region 3-3A; Ch - 2-6, 0-3 in Region 3-3A

Last week: Clinton beat Union County 22-19; Chester lost to Broome 58-44

Last meeting: Clinton won 42-21 (2013)

Points scored/allowed: Cl - 10.1/25.3; Ch - 20.1/34.9

Rankings: N/A

Players to watch: Cl - Sr. RB Shakeam Dowdy, Soph. QB Charlie Craven, Jr. TE/DE Daniel Moore, Jr. RB/CB Vee Thompson; Ch - Jr. TE/LB Quaterrious Thompson, Sr. WR/DB Earl Hinton, Soph. DB Jon-Michael Sanders, Sr. TE/DE Temaris Dixon

TV/radio: FM 90.3

Need to know: Chester’s shot at one of Region 3-3A’s top-three automatic playoff berths has sailed, but the Cyclones can still make the postseason with wins against Clinton and Union County to close out the year. Neither has overawed and Anthony Sterling’s bunch should feel like it can win these games. Senior quarterback Tommy Sanders has had a good season for Chester, and he’s really come alive the last two weeks with his legs, rushing for a combined 259 yards and two touchdowns. The Cyclones need their senior leader more than ever these next two games.

Lancaster at Union County

Coaches: L - Bobby Collins, first year; UC - Steve Taneyhill, third year

Records: L - 6-2, 2-1 in Region 3-3A; UC - 2-6, 0-3 in Region 3-3A

Last week: Lancaster lost to South Pointe 14-7; Union County lost to Clinton 22-19

Last meeting: Union County won 14-13 (1981)

Points scored/allowed: L - 23.8/8.4; UC - 26.1/29.8

Rankings: N/A

Players to watch: L - Sr. DL Ty Miller, Sr. DB Will Jackson, Sr. WR Jay Hood, Jr. DE Keounte Mack; UC - Soph. WR Shi Smith, Jr. QB De’arrius Smith, Jr. WR Roscoe Johnson

TV/radio: Comporium Cable 103/1103 or WRHI.com

Need to know: Union County has been a hot and cold team this season, so coach Bobby Collins and the Lancaster Bruins won’t underestimate Steve Taneyhill’s bunch. Lancaster showed in last week’s loss to South Pointe that it can hang with the big boys in 3A, but the Bruins will need to be more clinical in the red zone. Another huge outing from Jay Hood (9 catches, 166 yards against South Pointe) wouldn’t hurt either.

Indian Land at Buford

Coaches: IL - Michael Mayer, 14th year; B - Tripp Watts, first year

Records: IL - 4-4, 2-2 in Region 4-2A; B - 1-7, 1-4 in Region 4-2A

Last week: Indian Land beat North Central 20-6; Buford lost to Central 20-0

Last meeting: Indian Land won 28-6 (2014 season opener)

Points scored/allowed: IL - 18.4/20.1; B - 13.3/30.8

Rankings: N/A

Players to watch: IL - Jr. FB/LB Austin Gordon, Soph. WR/DB Matt Murray, Jr. LB Chris Blakeney, Jr. QB Dillon Mackey; B - Jr. QB Scotti Moser, Sr. RB/LB Evan Flynn, Sr. DE Kyle Norcia

TV/radio: N/A

Need to know: Indian Land has its hands on the wheel in Region 4-2A, it just needs to beat Buford (1-7) and Andrew Jackson (0-8) in its final two games. The Warriors face rival Buford for the second time this season after thumping the Yellow Jackets in the season opener. Indian Land ran for 200-plus yards in that game and intercepted three passes, a recipe that Michael Mayer and company would love to reenact.

Great Falls at Lamar

Coaches: GF - Kenneth Schofield, 15th year; L - Corey Fountain, first year

Records: GF - 7-1, 1-1 in Region 3-A; L - 6-2, 2-0 in Region 3-A

Last week: Great Falls lost to McBee 60-7; Lamar beat C.A. Johnson 29-12

Last meeting: Lamar won 22-14 (2013)

Points scored/allowed: GF - 26.1/21.3; L - 33.1/23.3

Rankings: Lamar is ranked No. 5 in S.C. Prep Media 1A poll

Players to watch: GF- Sr. WR/DB Shy Kelly, Soph. DE Darian Stevenson, Sr. OL Tyler Langley, Sr. QB Chris Culp; L - Sr. RB LaBradford Abson, RB Tre Ceasar, Sr. LB Hunter Collins

TV/radio: N/A

Need to know: A week after giving up 600-plus rushing yards to McBee, Great Falls confronts another power running team in Lamar. Where McBee had three guys over 100 yards, Lamar’s focus will likely be on LaBradford Abson, who had a big game against Lewisville. The senior already has 1,050 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground, and will test the Red Devil tacklers, who were exposed last week by McBee.

C.A. Johnson at Lewisville

Coaches: CAJ - Jerry Jackson, eighth year; L - Will Mitchell, third year

Records: CAJ - 2-7, 0-3 in Region 3-A; L - 0-8, 0-2 in Region 3-A

Last week: C.A. Johnson lost to Lamar 29-12; Lewisville was idle

Last meeting: C.A. Johnson won 28-20 (2013)

Points scored/allowed: CAJ - 10.9/32.2; L - 12.9/39.4

Rankings: N/A

Players to watch: CAJ - Sr. QB Charles Mallory, Sr. DL Wendell Bing, Sr. LB Ikeheem Anthony, Sr. RB/WR Mike Davis; L - Sr. WR Cody Montgomery, Soph. QB Trey Keels, Jr. RB D.J. Robinson, Sr. OL/DL Tyrone McCullough

TV/radio: N/A

Need to know: When Mallory has had big games, C.A. Johnson has done well. He piled up 248 yards rushing in an overtime loss to Great Falls, and Lewisville coach Will Mitchell is concerned with stopping the Hornets’ standout quarterback. Lewisville’s run defense hasn’t been very good, but Mitchell is hoping his team’s run game can get a boost from having five offensive line starters healthy and junior running back D.J. Robinson back from injury.
