S.C. extends voter registration deadline in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew
The S.C. Election Commission has extended the deadline to register to vote in the general election.
The commission announced the extension Thursday, as the Palmetto State braced for a hit from Hurricane Matthew. The move will allow extra time to register for citizens affected by voter registration office and post office closures related to the storm. Post offices are also closed Monday due to a federal holiday.
The following deadlines apply to all South Carolina voters:
- Registration by mail: Any voter registration by mail application that is postmarked Tuesday will be accepted.
- Online registration: Any online voter registration application submitted before midnight Sunday will be accepted.
- Applications submitted by fax or email: Any faxed or emailed application received by county voter registration offices before midnight Sunday will be accepted.
- In-person applications at county voter registration offices: Voters must register in person no later than Saturday.
Officials note that due to Hurricane Matthew, some county voter registration offices are closed through Saturday.
Anyone in the following categories must register in their county of residence by the deadline:
· Anyone who is not currently registered to vote in their county of residence.
· Any voter who has moved from one county to another and has not yet registered in their new county.
· Any voter who has moved to South Carolina from another state and has not yet registered in South Carolina.
