Wanted: Rightful owner of 1962 wedding band found in Rock Hill

The 87-year-old widower knows that a wedding band is more than a piece of gold.

So when this Rock Hill lady, who wants to stay anonymous, told police she found the old ring in the Food Lion parking lot off Ebenezer Road in Rock Hill late Monday, she was in tears and wanted the rightful owner to get it back.

The ring meant the marriage of two people 52 years ago, in 1962. It is a big-width man’s ring, likely a working man’s finger size. It has some wear on it but initials inside, and July 1962 can still be seen.

“This ring means something to somebody,” the lady said. “I just saw it lying there in the parking lot. Maybe someone had it on a chain, dropped it.”

Or maybe a thoughtful person was rolling it on a finger, thinking of love. It is a mystery.

“I don’t want anything, I just want the person who lost his memories to get it back,” said the lady, a mother and grandmother many times over who made peanut butter fudge and toffee brickle and even made sure the police ate some when they came to her house.

Rock Hill Police Officer Ray Hamilton, a father and grandfather and husband himself, responded to the lady’s house Tuesday afternoon. He vowed to help if possible, to find the owner.

The person who lost the ring can call the Rock Hill Police Department at 803-329-7200 to identify it, said police Capt. Brent Allmon.

“If we can help this nice lady who wants to help someone else get back a ring that is important, we will,” Allmon said.

That’s all the woman wants.

“If I can get that ring back to who lost it, it surely will be a happy new year,” she said.
