Demolition underway of former Charlotte Knights stadium in Fort Mill

Demolition has begun at the former Charlotte Knights baseball stadium just off Interstate 77 in York County.

Charlotte-based fashion retailer Cato has said it plans to build a distribution center in the space, as well as possibly a mixed-use development that could include hotels, restaurants and housing. It closed last summer on its long-planned purchase of the stadium site, adding 32 acres to the more than 250 acres of surrounding land the company already owned.

David Swenson, York County’s Economic Development director, said it’s yet to be determined what will go into the development and deferred to the retailer for comment. Cato did not immediately return requests for comment Wednesday.

The Fort Mill stadium, next to a baseball-shaped water tower visible from I-77, was built in 1990. The Knights played there until last year, when the triple-A team started play in its new BB&T Ballpark in uptown Charlotte, where it has broken its all-time attendance records.
