Crews from several fire departments responded to a townhome fire in Lake Wylie late Tuesday afternoon.

The call came in about 5 p.m. on the 700 block of Waterfall Way.

The tenants were cooking on a grill behind the unit when the back of the building caught fire, said Capt. Scott Boyd of the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department. The flames spread up into the attic.

No injuries were reported, and that unit was the only one affected, Boyd said. The second floor appeared to suffer the most damage. The tenants did not have renters insurance.

Fire departments from Clover, York, Newport and Steele Creek in Charlotte assisted.

The community was already rallying to assist the family of three Tuesday evening. Domino’s provided two pizzas for the family, and the District 2 Blue Eagles recreation league football team is collecting clothing items.

The team is asking for donations of:

  • Boys clothing; size 12 shirts, size 12 pants and size 5 shoes
  • Women’s clothing; size 6 pants, large shirts and size 8 shoes
  • Men’s clothing; size 32 pants, extra-large shirts and size 10 shoes

To donate, contact Yasmin Plummer at 973-390-2713 or Yplummer5797@gmail.com.
