Hello, summer! Registration is under way for camps
With school winding down, it’s time-register your children for local summer camps.
Kids of all ages are anticipating fun in the sun. Parents are eager to see their children active and occupied. There are plenty of options-make everyone happy.
Below is a list of opportunities compiled by The Herald that cover just about every interest – from children who are wild about animals to budding artists, soccer stars to those who are theatrical on (and off) the stage, and outdoor enthusiasts to mad scientists.
4-H Camps

The following are camps offered through the York County program and held at the extension office at 120 N. Congress St., York, unless otherwise noted:
▪ Beginners Sew, 9 a.m.-noon, June 20-23, ages 9-14. Learn the fundamentals of sewing. Cost is $40, including starter sewing kit.
▪ Canning, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., July 19-21, ages 9-15. Focus on water bath canning and food preservation and how to process fruits and tomatoes. Cost is $15.
▪ Quick Breads, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., July 26, ages 5-19. Make several breads, including one to take home. Cost is $10.
▪ Furry Friends, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., July 27, ages 5-19. Make homemade dog treats. Cost is $10.
▪ Summer Science day camp, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., June 7-9, ages 9-13. STEM learning with activities on energy, environmental science, geospatial science, health, plants, animals, robotics and engineering. Held at Glencairn Garden Learning Center. Cost is $70.

▪ Camp Counselor Training, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., June 6-7 with option to stay all week, rising 10th-graders and older. Gain skills as a youth program counselor. Register at both 4-H locations. Cost is $30.

▪ Summer Science Retreat at Clemson University, June 12-15, grades 9-12. Explore STEM, aquaculture and more. Cost is $150.
▪ Camp Long in Aiken, June 12-16, ages 7-14. Swimming, team courses, dances and crafts. Cost is $250. Scholarships available.
▪ Camp Wild at Chester State Park, June 28-30, ages 9-14. Tent camping, boating, crafts, shooting sports, hiking. Cost is $75.
▪ Camp Cooper in Summerton, July 10-14, ages 7-14. Swimming, team courses, dances, and crafts. Cost is $250. Scholarships available.
Arts Council
The Arts Council of York County sponsors four weeks of summer camps led by local artists. There are morning and afternoon sessions. The cost is $85 for members or $95 others. Registration deadline is two weeks before class begins. For details, go to yorkcountyarts.org.
The following camps will be at the Center for the Arts, 121 E. Main St., Rock Hill:
▪ Trash-Treasure, 9 a.m.-noon, July 13-17, ages 6 and older. Taught by Ashley Beard. Using the things that are usually thrown away, create wearable works of art. Camp concludes on Friday with a fashion show and performances.
▪ Drawing from Observation, 1-4 p.m., June 13-17, ages 12-14. Taught by Ashley Beard. Learn how to see with an artist’s eye and draw using traditional techniques involving perspective, proportion and value.
▪ The Art of the Cake, 1-4 p.m., June 13-17, ages 10 and older. Taught by Nadine Dresbach. Take a new approach on artistic design while learning the basics of cake decoration, including color mixing, piping techniques, sculpting with fondant and painting with buttercream. This is a noncooking class.
▪ Mask Making, 9 a.m.-noon, ages 8 and older, June 20-24. Taught by Fernando Pena. Learn traditional mask-making techniques, including sketching, wireframe forming, papier-mache, sculpting, painting and decoration.
▪ Mixed Media, 1-4 p.m., June 20-24, ages 10 and older. Taught by Fernando Pena. Learn collage, acrylic applications, mark-making, texturizing, layering, integrating found objects and more.
▪ Puppet Making, 9 a.m.-noon, June 27-July 1, ages 8 and older. Taught by Fernando Pena. Create a string puppet, give it personality, prepare a short skit and bring it-life.
▪ Screen Printing and Printmaking, 1-4 p.m., June 27-July 1, ages 12 and older. Taught by Fernando Pena. Create art, burn a screen and print artwork.
▪ Copy Cats! Having Fun with Printmaking, 9 a.m.-noon, July 11-15, ages 9 and older. Design and create your own blocks, discover the power in manipulating a single image to create extremely different results and explore the process of using found objects and unexpected materials to create prints with texture.
The following camp will be at the Gettys Art Center, 201 E. Main St., Rock Hill:
▪ Improv, Acting and Comedy, 9 a.m.-noon, June 20-24, ages 7 and older. Taught by Scott Pacitti. Explore laugh-filled exercises and skill driven improvisational theater games and activities.
▪ STOMP! Out Loud, 1-4 p.m., June 27-July 1, ages 11 and older. Students use their bodies as percussive art forms to create syncopated rhythms using hands, feet and voices.
▪ The Chocolate Artvark Series, 9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m., July 11-15, ages 9-12. Taught by Angie Clinton. Design a T-shirt, create a stained glass masterpiece, personalize a journal and discover what can be made from a wooden pallet.
Bethelwoods Camp
Founded in 1965, Bethelwoods Camp and Conference Center at 922 West Mount Gallant Road in York is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). It offers summer day and overnight camps as well as adventure camps. For information, go to bethelwoods.org.

Boys & Girls Clubs
The Boys & Girls Clubs of York County will offer the following camps for elementary, middle and high school students. PowerCamp is a half-day elementary age sports camp hosted by the local area Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Sports include football, basketball, baseball, soccer, cheerleading, archery and volleyball. Camp is offered-children who have completed kindergarten through eighth grade. Get in shape for cross country season and learn nutrition and athletic knowledge from certified running coaches. Must be able to run, nonstop, for 30 minutes. Cost is $150 for members, $165 others.

July 28, Ann Williams, The Uncommon Bond of Julia and Rose. Williams, local historian and author, will present her fictional story of an unusually close relationship between a slave and her mistress on an antebellum Carolina Piedmont plantation.
Aug. 4, Brattonsville Interpretive Staff, Ag and Animals. Spend the day with our interpreters exploring agriculture and livestock in 19th century plantation life.
The following will be held at the Main Street Children’s Museum, 133 E. Main St., Rock Hill:
▪ Tuesdays @ Two, 2-3 p.m., June through July, ages 2-6. Themed activities, stories, creative movement and crafts. Regular admission fees apply.
▪ Summer Playcation, 9-11:30 a.m., Thursdays – June 9, 16, 23 and 30; July 14, 21 and 28; and Aug. 11, ages 4-6. Stories, games, crafts. Cost is $10 for members, $15 others.
