Tractor-trailer burns after head-on crash in York County
A tractor-trailer burst into flames Thursday after a pickup crossed the center line and slammed head-on into the 18-wheeler just west of Rock Hill, officials said.
The crash happened about 12:45 p.m. on S.C. 324 at Mockingbird Lane, about 2.5 miles west of Rock Hill, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
A 2014 Toyota pickup traveling east on S.C. 324 crossed the center line and struck a westbound tractor-trailer head-on, said Lance Cpl. Tony Keller of the Highway Patrol. The driver of the tractor-trailer and his passenger were both wearing seat belts and were not injured.
The driver of the Toyota, a 41-year-old York man, also was wearing a seat belt, Keller said. He was taken by ambulance to Piedmont Medical Center. His condition was unclear Thursday afternoon.
Emergency officials said the trailer was filled with tires. The crash, which happened less than a mile from the Bethesda Volunteer Fire Department, caused a large fire that crews spent much of Thursday afternoon battling.
The scene was cleared and the roadway reopened just before 6 p.m. Thursday.
The crash remains under investigation.
