Deceased missing swimmer recovered from Catawba River near Rock Hill, sheriff says
A deceased swimmer was found Monday in South Carolina in the Catawba River near Rock Hill, officials said.
The person had been reported missing after going in the water Sunday afternoon, officials said.
A search started Sunday evening, stopped during the overnight hours, and resumed Monday morning.
The body was found by divers around noon Monday, according to a written statement from the York County Sheriff’s Office.
“It’s not the outcome we were hoping for, but sadly dive teams have recovered the missing swimmer from the Catawba River,” the sheriff’s office said in a written statement on the sheriff’s office social media.
The name of the deceased person has not been released by the York County Coroner’s Office.
Search started Sunday
Deputies from the sheriff’s office assisted the Lesslie Fire Department in the search in the river near S.C. 5 at the Lancaster County line, according to a written statement from the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office divers stopped the search at dark Sunday night, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the sheriff’s office. The search resumed Monday morning, Faris said.
The area is southeast of Rock Hill near where the S.C. 5 and a train bridge cross the river.
Emergency management officials from York and Lancaster counties, along with deputies from both counties sheriff’s offices, were part of the search Monday.
York County brought its emergency response mobile home to the scene, along with other equipment.
