Easter Egg Classic is Thursday at Cherry Park

The Great Easter Egg Classic for children age 2-11 will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Cherry Park in Rock Hill.

There will be 50,000 eggs with candy and prizes spread over the softball fields. Prizes must be picked up by 6 p.m.

Collection bags are available as you enter the park. No baskets or unofficial bag. For start times by age group go to EasterEggClassic.com

Special events

▪ Poet Metta-Sáma Melvin will read her works and speak to students about creative writing at 7 p.m. April 6 in the Tuttle Dining Room at Winthrop University. Melvin is an assistant professor and the director of creative writing at Salem College and has written three books, “Nocturne Trio,” “South of Here,” and her most recent chapbook, “The Year We Turned Dragon.” The visit is part of the Creative Writers Reading Series, hosted by the Winthrop University Department of English. Free and open to the public.

▪ Rock Hill High School and Winthrop University will co-host the CWEA Circuit Championships Saturday. The public is invited to watch performances by middle school cadets, high school performers, and independent ensembles as they compete in indoor percussion and winter guard contests. The competitions will be 8 a.m. until the 4:30 p.m. awards program at Rock Hill High School gym, 320 West Springdale Road, and 9 a.m. until the 10:30 p.m. awards program at the Winthrop Coliseum, 1162 Eden Terrace. ▪ Children’s Day on the Farm,” an annual family event at Historic Brattonsville celebrating farm life in the Carolina Piedmont during the 18th and 19th centuries, will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m Saturday. A team of draft horses will beplowing in the fields to prepare for spring-time planting. Visitors will see newborn lambs. Hands-on activities include candle-dipping, blacksmithing and food preparations in the way of the early settlers. Children will enjoy toys and games of the era. Pony and wagon rides will be available for a small fee. Palmetto Blue, an award-winning bluegrass band, will perform. The Plated Pallette Palette will offer food concessions for sale. Admission: $8 adults, $6 seniors, $4 ages 4-17, free ages 3 and younger and Culture & Heritage Museum members.

▪ Kings Mountain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will honor Vietnam War veterans at noon March 29 at York City Hall. York Mayor Eddie Lee will speak. The event is in partnership with the Vietnam War Commemoration Committee.

▪ “Budding and Grafting” is the topic of First Friday in the Garden, 11 a.m. April 1 at the Glencairn Learning Center, 826 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill. Clemson Extension Agent Paul Thompson will give the presentation.

▪ The Catawba Chapter of DAR, a Vietnam 50th Commemorative Partner, will recognize veterans who served during the Vietnam era at 3 p.m. March 29 at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2115 Celanese Road. March 29 was the last day that U.S. troops were on the ground in Vietnam. ▪ Composer Nate May and bass vocalist Andrew Robert Munn combine contemporary opera and passions for environmental and economic justice in Appalachia in a performance of “Dust in the Bottomland,” 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Frances May Barnes Recital Hall at Winthrop University. “Dust in the Bottomland” grapples with issues of prescription drug addiction, mountaintop removal mining and the changing fabric of rural Appalachian communities in a 45-minute chamber opera written for bass, piano and electronic soundscapes. The CCC Boys of York County: a musical tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps, 2-4 p.m. Thursday in Rock Hill and 2-4 p.m. March 29 in York. Bill Jamerson tells the story of the Civilian Conservation Corps through song, stories, and a brief DVD presentation. Anyone with CCC memorabilia or photos is encouraged to bring them to the presentation to share with the audience. Light refreshments will be served. ▪ AARP will have free federal and state income tax preparation Tuesdays and Thursdays through April 14 at the Fort Mill Library in Baxter Village. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with the last client taken at 3:30 p.m. The service is primarily first-come but a limited number of appointments are available. There is no limit on age or income. ▪ Taxaide will offer free tax preparation 12:30-3:30 p.m. through March 31 and April 13-14 in the adult education area at the Flexible Learning Center, 1234 Flint St. Ext., Rock Hill. ▪ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance will offer free tax preparation, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through April 14 in the wellness center at Rock Hill City Hall. Saturday service will be offered Saturdays in February from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Rock Hill Galleria, Leroy Springs Recreation Complex in Fort Mill and the Clover library. Volunteers

▪ The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and other jobs at the shelter.
