Community news for York, Chester and Lancaster counties, May 22, 2016
A new meteorite collection is on display at the Museum of York County, it will run in conjunction with “Dinosaur Revolution Maze,” a new exhibit that will run from June 11-Sept. 10.
Funding for the meteorites was made possible through a donation from The Allstate Foundation in honor of the volunteerism of local Allstate agent Blake Crook. Crook is actively engaged with the Carolina Skygazers, a local astronomy group that meets monthly in the museum’s Settlemyre Planetarium.
The collection include three stony meteorites from the 2013 meteorite fall in Chelybinsk, Russia; a 492-gram stony meteorite from Dar el Kahal, Mali; a slice of a stony meteorite, also from Dar el Kahal; an iron hexahedrite from Agoudal, Morocco; and two octahedrite iron slices from Muonionalusta in northern Sweden.
Also on display during the dinosaur-themed summer itinerary will be a piece of the seldom-seen Cherokee Springs meteorite, on loan from the Smithsonian Institution. The Cherokee Springs meteorite is one of two that fell in Spartanburg County July 1, 1933. The larger piece, weighing about 12 pounds, fell in the town of Cherokee Springs.
The “Dinosaur Revolution Maze” exhibit kicks off with “Dinosaur Family Day” June 11. Meteorite collector John Fendley, a member of the Carolina Skygazers, will present a show-and-tell of his personal meteorite collection from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. John Sinclair, curator of Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute’s Meteorite and Minerals Museum, will share his dynamic presentation – “When the Meteors Came Down,” June 13 along with his personal collection of meteorites gathered from around the globe.
