Celebrating the history, customs and cultures of African-Americans, Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Rock Hill’s two-day celebration will be June 17-18.
This year’s Juneteenth Rock Hill events will focus on a time of reflection, renewal and pride of African-American culture, history and customs. Juneteenth Rock Hill is inclusive of all races and nationalities.
The celebration begins at Fountain Park in conjunction with Food Truck Fridays. Activities will be held from 6-10 p.m. June 17. Entertainment will be provided by Ken Knox and Company, 3N1, Ann Caldwell and the Magnolia Singers. Local author Kimberly Johnson will emcee.
Mount Prospect Baptist Church and Friendship College will host events 11 a.m.-3 p.m June 18. Activities include a free cookout featuring Rock Hill’s retired NFL star Gerald Dixon, arts and crafts vendors, various entertainment and a presentation to the Ann Cain Scholarship Award winner.
The Ann Cain Scholarship was created by the Juneteenth Rock Hill celebration board in tribute to Dr. Ann Cain, who was a community leader, activist and educator. The scholarship is a one-time scholarship for a high school senior graduating in June of the current school year.
Later in the evening a Friendship College reunion and history harvest will be at the Rock Hill Country Club. Tickets are $45 in advance and $50 at the door.
Special events
▪ The Museum of York County will offer “Dinosaur Revolution Maze,” an interactive learning experience within a maze setting, a variety of dinosaur-themed activities and educational programs will be featured throughout the natural history museum from June 11-Sept. 10. The museum also will present a selection of fossils, models and graphics highlighting dinosaurs that once roamed the Carolina Piedmont region. The museum’s dinosaur-themed itinerary features special planetarium shows and the museum’s new meteorite collection, which features a special loan from the Smithsonian Institution of a meteorite that fell near Spartanburg in 1933. On July 13, John Sinclair, curator of Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute’s Meteorite and Minerals Museum, will share his presentation “When the Meteors Came Down,” along with his personal collection of meteorites gathered from around the globe. “Dinosaur Family Day,” an opening event, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 11, will feature special activities, crafts, a dinosaur costume parade and a traveling science center with live reptiles. Meteorite expert John Fendley will be on-site for a show-and-tell of his personal meteorite collection. Food will be available for purchase.

Entertainment
▪ The Concert in the Park series continues with Tony Adams at 6:30 p.m. June 14 at Fewell Park. Adams plays a mix of pop, country and beach favorites. The concert is free. Bring a picnic and blanket or lawn chair.
▪ The McCelvey Center’s Lowry Family Theater will host two Grand Ole McCelvey concerts featuring local string ensemble Cottonwood and the Grammy-award winning Peasall Sisters. Specializing in traditional Carolina Piedmont bluegrass music, Cottonwood will perform 7-9 p.m. Saturday. The five-piece string ensemble includes Dan Hinson on guitar, Don Jones on mandolin, Zach Lemhouse on fiddle, Mark Mears on banjo, and Tony Helms on bass. Tickets are $10. The Grammy and Country Music Association award-winning Peasall Sisters return to the Grand Ole McCelvey 7-9 p.m. July 8. The Peasall Sisters have performed at the Grand Ole Opry, Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. Tickets are $15 online and at the door. Hunger relief
▪ The Second Harvest Partners, sponsored by Providence Presbytery. will have a hunger relief site at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Freedom Temple Church, 215 E. Main St., Rock Hill. Volunteers will help distribute food participants who meet USDA eligibility income guidelines. For information, contact Catawba Area Agency on Aging at 803-329- 9670.
▪ The York County Council on Aging, in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Social Services, will issue free coupons worth $25 to low income individuals age 60 and older to be used to purchase fresh produce at local participating farmers’ markets through Oct. 15. Coupons will be issued 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Senior Center at Highland Park, 917 Standard St., Rock Hill from 1- 2:30 p.m. June 15 at the York Senior Center, 14 N. Congress St., York. Do not arrive before 12:30 as there is no available seating. Applications must be submitted in person. Proof of identity and residence in York County is required. Applicants must also meet household income eligibility limits. Information regarding the income of all household members is required to determine eligibility. Those who want to apply for homebound seniors must provide proof of identity and proof of income for the homebound senior at the time of application. ▪ SC Works Catawba will host a light industrial job fair, 10 a.m.-noon June 14 at USC Lancaster’s Bradley Arts Building, Arnold special events room, 467 Hubbard Drive. Recreation
▪ Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism is offering a two-stage adventure race 9 a.m. Saturday along the Catawba River with registration currently underway. The Pump House River Run consists of a 3 mile paddle from Riverwalk to River Park, followed by a 5K run on the Piedmont Medical Center Trail. Kayaks and paddle boards can be used for the paddle portion of the event. Youth and adult divisions are offered, and participants can compete solo or as a two-person relay team. The event begins at the kayak launch in Riverwalk on Herron’s Ferry Road at 7 a.m. with packet pick-up, equipment drop-off. Volunteers
▪ Girls on the Run Tri County SC’s fall 2016 coach registration is open. Girls on the Run is a physical-activity based, positive youth development program that inspires girls in third-eighth grades to be joyful, healthy and confident. The volunteer-led program brings together groups of 8-15 girls for a 10-week season. Volunteer coaching opportunities include head coaches and assistant coaches and require no prior experience.
