Police: Rock Hill dad left kids alone in car for four hours
Police say a Rock Hill father who was under the influence of an unknown substance left his four children in the car nearly four hours hours while he was in a convenience store Friday, according to law enforcement records.
Jason Ray Grant, 38, was charged with four counts of unlawful conduct toward a child and two counts of possession of a controlled substance, according to a police report. He was placed in the Rock Hill city jail and was released Saturday after posting $42,500 bond.
Rock Hill police officers were called to a gas station on Riverview Road just before 9 a.m. Friday after someone reported four juveniles being inside a car since 5 a.m., according to the report. The 11-year-old sitting in the driver’s seat told officers her father was in the bathroom of the gas station.
Police say they found Grant in a bathroom stall. He told officers he was traveling to Virginia with his children and stopped at the station about 5 a.m. “because he was tired and needed to take a nap.”
Two of the children were sitting in a front passenger seat, and the other two were sitting on top of a pile of clothes and a mattress in the back of the vehicle, police said. They told officers they had been alone in the car “several hours” while waiting for their father.
Grant, who “was clearly under the influence of an unknown substance,” was arrested and charged, the report states. Inside the car, officers found an unmarked pill bottle containing 19 dosage units of amphetamines and a blue pill case containing several amphetamine pills and three dosage units of Adderall.
A gas station employee found a single dosage unit of amphetamine in the stall where Grant was, and officers found a dosage unit of Suboxen and a pen pipe with crushed pill residue on the end of it in Grant’s pocket.
Grant’s wife took custody of the children and the vehicle, police said.
